Badminton Photoshoot

Since this blog has suffered from my being quite busy over the winter months, I thought I would let you in on one of my most recent projects, that has absolutely nothing to do with weddings, for once 😉

I try to play Badminton at least twice a week – workload and family permitting, of course. From September to March, I even managed to participate in the weekend league matches.

Instead of just constantly repeating our mistakes, we actually have an experienced player who sets a practice schedule and addresses our many technical shortcomings. Setting up a photoshoot on a Thursday night with him would be the perfect way to hone my strobist skills and capture some great moves, rather than our own bumbling efforts 😉

The above was actually the last pic we captured after a rather exhausting 3-hour session of changing setups, uncounted practice runs and me cursing at my equipment… a pretty simple 3-light-setup that worked like a charm!

One of the easier shots – mostly because the movements were a tad more predictable and slower – was him going for a drop shot close in to the net. What with me fiddling with the lights a bit, I think we got this in under 10 minutes!

One of the tougher shots that night. Extremely quick movements, somewhat unpredictable positions and the fact that I had to capture exactly the right hundredth of a second before he hit the flyer… but this pic is very much worth it!

Showing up, setting up and hitting that trigger is only part of the workflow, of course 😉 I spent half of the next day processing a small selection of the pictures taken to get the most out of them. It’s amazing how much more you can get out of images, when you devote a bit of time and effort to them, even after they’ve landed on your memory card! Don’t believe me? Check out the before and after screen captures below:

Totally worth it!

And if we ever need to create a new look for the club website, we could just as easily use the following cutouts to tell prospective players that this could be them 😉

If the timing works, we may just get around to fine-tuning this first attempt at staged badminton photos!
